Under the weather (slightly)

My late nights in montreal this past weekend left me a bit under the weather when I got home. So, I have been taking it as it goes with training. I didn't run after work yesterday as I had mild flu like symtoms. I felt a bit better this morning and swam around 2500 m. I did 100 swim, 100 back stroke, 100 swim, 100 back stroke as a warmup; I did some drills: one arm swim changing arms every six strokes for 100 m and then 100 m of swimming with as few strokes as possible. I repeated those drills for a total of 400 m. For the main sets, I did 5- 100s with paddles; 4-100s without paddles; 3-100s with paddles; 2-100s without paddles and 1-100 with paddles. As a cool down I did 100 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and 50 backstroke for a total of 2500. It took me about an hour with some breaks. I am having people for dinner tonight so I can't train after work. I was thinking about running at lunch time but as of 11:25 am I am on the fence about that.

I am still planning on a big training weekend so maybe it wouldn't hurt me to skip running at lunch and really get started after work tomorrow. I am going to swim again in the am to make it 3 swims so far this week. I would like to get another on in on the weekend to make it four.

I was sort of laughing a bit to myself this morning at the pool because there are alot of new triathletes training this year. It is fun to see their progression (having gone through it) as they get more into it and start getting all the gear: racing swimsuits, asking about wetsuits, triathlon bikes etc.... Triathlon is very weighted toward having the best "stuff". There is alot of marketing involved. But, I buy into it as much as the next person but every once and awhile I do think about it.

Back to the grind

I got home from Montreal on Monday evening and am a bit tired having had a couple of late nights. Yesterday (tuesday) I taught my spin class at the Spa. Next week will be my last week for doing these classes and then I will be done for the summer.

This morning we had our wednesday swim class with Dave. He had an under water camera today and videotaped our stroke from under water. The good news is that my hand, arm and elbow position as it strikes the water is pretty good. It is supposed to be the hand hitting the water first, then forearm coming in on an angle, keeping your elbow from sinking down. The bad news is that my kicking is poor. I already knew this. My legs are stiff and I kick unevenly. We did some swimming with paddles and then without to get the feel of the water. We ended with some back stroke and butterfly. I am just fair at both of these strokes. I plan to run after work today around 10 k. Looking ahead, it is not that warm out for cycling but I hope to get out at least once on the weekend. I would like to cycle out to New Glasgow and do some of the hills around there. As well, I plan to step up the distance a bit on my running and do a 23 k run this weekend. The weather, of course, can interfere with those plans. As I mentioned in previous entries, I am doing the Mooseman Triathlon on June 6th and that is not a lot of time to get ready to do a good half ironman race.
